Guest Post: Friendship by Dee S. Knight

What can be better than a get-together with friends you haven’t seen in awhile? I had the opportunity to find out how sweet the feeling one weekend in 2007. That weekend I traveled from St. Louis to New Jersey to visit with five friends I’d worked with in 1997-1999. Our team was created under a star—none of us had worked with each other before or even knew each other, yet we melded a special bond that hadn’t been broken by distance or time.

We didn’t start off as fast friends. Warmth grew over time. But when I left New Jersey in 1999, I was closer to those five women than I ever could have imagined. While several of us had gotten together a few times, all six of us have only met up once. By then we’d scattered—me to St. Louis, another to Texas, yet another to south New Jersey. We’d e-mailed and spoken on the phone but we hadn’t been face-to-face in years. Not until that weekend.

I’m sorry to say, the reason we all made the effort to travel to New Jersey was because one of us is seriously ill. Time was short for her, and with her energy level waning, none of us wanted to take the chance that the following spring—our preferred time to meet—would be too late for her. So we plotted and planned, searched for cheap airline tickets…and worried.

It had been years. What if we sat around and stared at each other? What if the two who had children only talked kids and the rest of us were left out? What if there were arguments (political philosophies varied widely in the group)? Worse, and most likely, what if our emotions over our friend’s illness took control. So easily we could forget our purpose—to enjoy each other and our time together. That was my greatest concern.

Well, the weekend was one of the best in my life. Thankfully, once we saw each other, there were no worries. We couldn’t help but laugh and talk like crazy and act a little silly. No one dwelled on illness, or any of our troubles. We ate, and drank, and talked, and laughed. And celebrated life, love and friendship.

For only one moment did I weaken and feel tears sting my eyes—when we raised a glass to each other. Maybe I can be forgiven that. After all, the stars don’t align to bring people together like this often. Once twenty-two years ago, and once again that weekend. It’s something to cherish.

Have you been in a disparate group that no one would have imagined would form friendships? How do you think it happened?

About Passionate Destiny:

Passionate Destiny by [Dee S. Knight, Dee S. Knight]Dr. Margaret Amis-Hollings, professor of women’s studies at a small New Jersey college, is a woman who confidently knows who she is and what she expects of life. Until she loses her teaching position and her well-ordered life gets turned upside down. Then, in a subtle stroke of whimsy, fate tosses her a gift in an historic home and property in Virginia.

Harboring visions of Gone With the Wind, she determines to use River Peace as a temporary reprieve from her troubles. Images of Tara quickly evaporate when she arrives to discover the reality of her inheritance, however.

River Peace has history, grace and style going for it. After only one night, Margaret discovers that it also has a ghost. She’s visited by a male spirit from the time of the War Between the States, who knows how to make a woman feel special. And very loved.

Aaron Belton meets Margaret when she first arrives in Virginia. He’s renowned for historic renovations on a multitude of properties, but he’s got a special place in his heart for River Peace. He and his family believe the property always should have belonged to them. In fact, Aaron will do almost anything to make that happen. When his passion for the house changes to a passion for the house’s owner, Aaron’s as surprised as anyone. Can he gain both, the woman and the house? To do so, he’ll have to face a spectral being.
And his own destiny.

Meet Dee/Anne/Jenna:

A few years ago, Dee S. Knight began writing, making getting up in the morning fun. During the day, her characters killed people, fell in love, became drunk with power, or sober with responsibility. And they had sex, lots of sex.

After a while, Dee split her personality into thirds. She writes as Anne Krist for sweeter romances, and Jenna Stewart for ménage and shifter stories. All three of her personas are found on the Nomad Authors website. And all three offer some of the best romance you can find! Also, once a month, look for Dee’s Charity Sunday blog posts, where your comment can support a selected charity.
