Civil Hearts, a paranormal romantic suspense from Claire Gem

Please help me welcome Claire Gem to the blog today. Claire is here with a short Q&A and to share her book Civil Hearts with us. I can’t wait to hear more about Civil Hearts

Q&A with Claire Gem:

Q: What is your favorite place to write?
A: I have a lovely, huge mahogany desk, complete with an elaborately scrolled hutch in my office. I’m lucky to have this space, not huge but certainly sufficient for my purposes. I also have two large freshwater fish tanks in the room, each housing my home-raised angelfish. The bubbling of the tanks is a soothing backdrop for my writing routine.
And then there’s Leo. I recently acquired a lovely blue and white Persian kitten who also lives most of his life in my office. Or to put it more succinctly, in my lap. Or on my desk. He’s become my most efficient muse.

Q: What are you working on now and when can we expect to see it?
A: I’m working on a supernatural romantic suspense, working title “Pigments.” It’s a little different from my previous work, and that’s why I’ve been struggling with it for so long! But I think I’ve finally found my mojo (thanks in part to Leo!), and I hope to have Pigments ready for release by spring.

Q: What would you do if you couldn’t write?
A: Oh my. That’s not a good scenario. Eat. A lot. Drink. Vodka and wine. A lot. Not a healthy scenario at all!

Q: Do you listen to music when you write? What is your to-go playlist and why?
A: I’m a huge fan of Renaissance music, instrumental. I’m particularly fond of an artist by the name of Christopher Caoutte. In fact, his music is the backdrop for a few of my book videos. The lilting melodies and haunting quality of the music inspire me to write in the same way: lilting prose, haunting ambience.
My latest release is set in a haunted antebellum mansion in Alabama—a house I visited about 20 years ago. I kept getting the unsettling feeling that there was something—or someone—just beyond my line of vision. But when I turned, there was no one there.
Sometimes story ideas lay their seeds in my brain but hibernate there, germinating without warning years later. I had long ago forgotten the tour of the antebellum home in Alabama. But from somewhere in the depths of my memory, the Alabama memory resurfaced one night in a dream. Complete with the ghost of a Confederate soldier pounding on the front door.
Civil Hearts was born.
