Nothing stops the resolute heroin in contemporary romantic suspense, Becker Circle

By: Addison Brae

It’s New Year’s. It’s also the time for people to enthusiastically create new resolutions. Have you started yours? According to U.S. News and World Report a few years ago, some 80 percent of these people are buried in guilt by mid-February for already failing to follow through with their resolutions. I’m the same, so I gave up on resolutions years ago. I’m a huge believer in fresh starts though, and starting over needs new ways of thinking.

Gillian, the heroin in Becker Circle, takes a much more permanent approach than the resolution ritual for her fresh start. She orchestrates a scheme to graduate Harvard early and move out of the apartment she shared with her abusive boyfriend while he’s away for the holidays. She brings with her an old car, enough money for the apartment deposit, and a fierce will to be strong, independent, and never let anyone control her again.

With each experience, she writes rules for her new life. The rules help her keep old habits from creeping back in. These are my 10 favorites of Gillian’s rules. I do have to confess, I stick with these in my own life, too.

1. Have more fun.
2. Violence is a deal breaker. No exceptions.
3. Never let drunk guys drool on me.
4. Look happy. It does pay off.
5. You can still be alone no matter how many people surround you. Get used to the situation or change it.
6. No one can mess with me.
7. Break more rules.
8. If a man needs a therapist, treat him like a patient.
9. Never make a promise I can’t keep.
10. Never hesitate when you’re sure.
Gillian’s realistic. She allows herself to slip up. We all do. She’s resolute to follow these new rules as she becomes a stronger, more independent woman. And they work.

What are you resolute to end or begin in 2019 . . . or in your new life?

About Becker Circle:

My first and only boyfriend believed I was too gutless to leave. He was dead wrong. My name’s Gillian, and I graduated Harvard early and left his hot temper and everyone else behind for Dallas. Determined to make it on my own, I land a second job bartending at the neighborhood pub smack in drama central where most every jerk in the neighborhood hits on me—at a huge price.

A week into the job, the neighborhood’s very popular drug dealer falls to his death a few feet from the table I’m serving. The cops say suicide, but the hot guitar player in the house band and I suspect foul play, and I intend to prove it. We dig deeper, grow closer, and make a shocking discovery. We know the murderer. Excerpt from Becker Circle:

Mixers and whisky brands and vodka flavors run through my head on the short walk to the first shift of my new night job. My jacket shields me from the cold as I step through the circles of light shining on the dark red brick sidewalk. A couple jogs by totally into one another, and three guys who were probably high school stars toss a football near the fountain yelling back for not doing it right.

What am I doing? Am I invisible? Everyone’s with someone just like I was. Taking the CPA job in Dallas seemed like such a great idea. It’s where no one knows me. Away from Connor. Before he had a chance to break me.

Rule one of my new life – forget about what already happened. Period.
